概要	The objective of this study was to clarify the emotional responses of mothers of children with Down syndrome, focusing on the period from the Down syndrome diagnosis until the mothers were able to attain positive mindsets. Nine Japanese mothers with Down syndrome children (3-6 years old) were interviewed. The transcribed data were analyzed using modified grounded theory approach.　In relation of mothers' emotional responses, six categories were emerged. The categories were 'not being able to grasp the situation', 'loss of hope for the future', 'increased isolation', 'intensified anxiety', 'realization that my child has Down syndrome', and 'having the opportunity to take a step forward'.　This study showed that mothers who did not receive effective support experienced the emotional responses of 'intensified anxiety'.
